THE END OF STUDENT SCREEN? // 05.09.2003
As you may be aware the soon-to-be-finishing season of Student Screen is the last. Whether this is a long term definite is impossible to tell and it may turn out to be nothing more than wishful thinking to see it return. Student Screen organizer and co-creator Andrew Elkin had this to say in the Student Screen Forum:

As of today, 29th August I have been informed that no more films can be booked for the nights. This essentially means that Enter the Dragon on the 6th September may well be the last ever screening for us. We are trying to appeal against this verdict, but my advice can only be enjoy it while you can, as there aren't any plans for further seasons beyond this.

My thanks to everyone involved, and most importantly to the people who came week in, week out and supported the idea.

Student Screen started in February 2003 with 'Donnie Darko' and has shown some of the most popular and profitable films of the 70s, 80s and 90s to the joy of hundreds. Although audience numbers slipped during the summer period, the organizers chose to test the project to see if it could continue during 'off-peak' seasons when the students had gone home. Though the audience numbers may not have matched the 'peak' seasons it was considered that the films were making enough money per-season to warrant continuation.

Mr Elkin later updated the season schedule too:

The week's scheduled film, 'Enter the Dragon', although being confirmed over 8 weeks ago, has been cancelled by the distributors. When they came to check whether a print was in fact in stock, they found that there isn't one still in circulation. My deepest apologies to anyone who was looking forward to the film. As a massive fan myself, the opportunity to see Bruce Lee battle it out on the big screen was something that I'd been looking forward to for months (coupled with the fact that this could well be the last ever week for Student Screen, I felt we would have gone out on a blast).

There has been a replacement film scheduled, Oliver Stone's 'Natural Born Killers'.

It is a shame that the event has been deserted in its infancy with many great films still to be shown and many exciting offers in development. Keep your fingers crossed that it may come back - in some form or another - one day.
