A NIGHT TO REMEMBER // 05.06.2003
Wednesday night saw the first public performance of 'Autumn Heart', and was also the first time that anyone had seen the newly completed 'Extended Cut' of the film that runs five minutes longer than the previous edition.

In attendance from the production were Director Andrew Davidson and his mother, Executive Producer Katherine Reeve, Actor Darren McAree, his fiancee and his parents, Medic and Actor Mark Allen and Actor/Designer John Walters. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as the Film Theatre slowly filled with other groups, their friends and family.

'Autumn Heart' was the first film to be shown, and kicked off the evening in high gear. The fear of an audience's reaction was soon lost as the auditorium watched fixedly as the story of James Hadley and his life on folded in front of them in a uniquely stylized and controlled fashion.

Speaking after the event Director Andrew Davidson said: 'I wasn't particularly worried about the quality of the film and how people would appreciate that, but more so this deep troubled story that we tried to tell. I guess all we can hope for is that people connect with it, maybe not literally as having been through the same situation as James. Maybe just identify with the themes of family and love we were expressing. It went bloody well though.'

One person he was particularly keen to impress was leading man Darren McAree. 'Darren had been involved since before there was a film,' says the director, 'We wrote this for him, all I wanted was to make what I'd promised him and for it to be something that he'd be proud of. He brought his parents along, so I guess he's happy.'

Though being the first time that anyone saw the 'Extended Cut' was nerve wracking. 'Only because I was worried that people would think it was a different film. It's not. It's the same film, but with the sections we had to take out put back in and also with some adjustment to the framing that, had we had the time initially, would have been done.'

The film was well received and those involved met with kind words from their peers. Other highlights included 'A404' which provided the intentional laughs for the evening and the usual drudge of over ambitious student films that don't work didn't put a dampener on the evening.

lastatak.com would like to thank Ray Johnson, Richard Allan and Kevin Brett for putting on an unforgettable night, be that wrongly or rightly so.
