Monday 12th August: the last day of principle photography on 'The Silent Voice' started as had many days before, with the usual group of nine extras used to film shots of a busy lecture hall.
However whilst out to buy a bottle of water, Director Andrew Davidson spotted a group of Spanish Students who were at Staffordshire University for an English Summer School.
With the help of Joe Barnett, they set out to see if they could recruit a couple of people to fill up some extra seats.
They approached the tutors in charge and explained that they were making a film in the Film Theatre attached to the University, and that they were wondering if they could 'borrow' some students. The tutors thought this was a great idea and asked for anyone interested to step forward. Andrew led the way back to the Theatre and jokingly told those waiting inside that he and Joe had returned with 'a couple of people'.
Everyone looked on in astonishment as nearly 40 people filed into the room to take up their seats as students in the lecture. In fact, suddenly having so many people afforded the filmmakers the opportunity to add characters that until that point they had feared would be cut out. Three of the Spanish students were chosen to play the parts: Juan Manuel Fernandez Vazquez played Tom Forrester, Maria Consuelo Garcia Serrano played the love of his life Corrina Sellars and Alba Maria Martin Carmona played the part of Laura Spenser.
The new extras were put through their paces as they were made to react to things that had already been filmed, yet at no point did language ever become a problem and they happily did as directed. Numerous shots were completed for different parts of the film. The largest being the entire theatre filling and emptying of people for the beginning and end of the film.
After the filming had been completed, much to the disappointment of the students, there was a huge - and slightly alarming to the filmmakers - photocall so that the Spanish students could remember their time making a film in England.
Everyone involved in the film would like to thank the Spanish students for their help, enthusiasm and good humour.
