EVIL JONATHAN IS DEAD
'Evil Jonathan Is Dead' was created for the 2004 Nokia Shorts film competition. The challenge of the competition was that the films had to be 15 seconds in length, with an additional 3 seconds allowed for opening titles and 5 seconds for end credits.

Director Andrew Davidson was keen to take up the challenge to see if he could tell a story over such a short period of time. Since the completion of 'LiMBO' in 2002 Andrew has been toying with the idea of shooting a fight scene but had yet to find a suitable project to create one for. The 15 second time frame of the competition seemed the ideal time to create the fight as it would be a visual experience rather than requiring dialogue.

As the idea developed Andrew rationalized that the short film would need a 'hook', something that would hopefully make people recall the film after seeing it, something to make them say: 'You remember the one with...' and as a result the "villain" of the film was conceived.

The original intention of the film was that two different characters would meet and fight, but shortly before shooting started one of the actors dropped out leaving Andrew with Darren McAree as the only actor. The two discussed if they knew anyone that could stand in at the last minute. Darren asked, "Do we really need someone else?" To which Andrew replied, "You can hardly fight yourself!"

But fight himself Darren did.

Luckily for both Director and Actor they had filmed similar split screen shots together on the film 'Quondam' so the process was not as daunting as it could have been. So practiced were they by the time of shooting that now they consider the shots to be technically more proficient than their work on 'Quondam'. The "villain" was created by Laura Elkin and operated by Andrew or Darren depending on the shot requirements.

The final element was the score, Andrew once again turned to composer Steven Coltart. The creation of 15 seconds of music to match the action of the video was as much of a challenge for Steven as it had been for Andrew.

The film did not make it into the ten finalists in the competition.
