James’ parents met and married at university in the summer of 1971. Michael worked in the Potteries whilst Debbie worked as a teacher in a local secondary school; she did so until her death in 1994. Five years after the marriage they tried for their first child. James was born in the 19th of November 1976.

Just after his third birthday his little sister Elizabeth Jane Hadley was born. At the age of four James started infant school. Never a sporty child, he preferred reading and Art. He wasn't unpopular, especially with the girls. His teacher described them as being ‘Like bees round a honey pot.’

At the age of five he was caught going to the toilet behind the school and was made to stand at the front during assembly. Everybody laughed. James wouldn't return to school for nearly a month and was taught at home by Debbie during that time as she was home looking after baby Elizabeth. Little James would often stay up late and read stories to his sleeping sister. He was convinced that she could hear him, as she would twitch at the exciting parts.

James soon settled back into school and made friends with Peter Lee, who had been in trouble about the same time as he for looking up girls’ skirts. They were always in some minor trouble when younger, but it never got out of hand.

When Peter and James started secondary school at the age of eleven, they both found it an overwhelming experience. Neither really fit in to start, as they were still not too keen on sport, and found that school life suddenly revolved around not much else. The two stuck close together and tried to stay out of the way of the bigger kids. This plan succeeded until they were thirteen. They were walking home to James’ house when they ran into some older boys from a rival school. Two of the older boys started pushing Peter around, whilst another held James back. When a flailing punch of Peter’s connected with the eyebrow of the gang leader, drawing blood, Peter was savagely beaten. He was not seriously hurt, but spent two nights in hospital and was off school for four months. James visited him every day.

During Peter’s absence from school, James started to spend time with a girl called Maria. Her father was Spanish and her mother English. Though not doing anything more than holding hands and having the occasional peck on the cheek, they considered each other each other boyfriend and girlfriend. A year later Maria’s family moved to Spain. He only received one letter from her telling him that she had a big house, lived by the sea, it was hot and that she had a new cat. James never heard from her again.

Upon Peter’s return to school, James noticed that his friend was more keen on sports that before and as they turned sixteen started to bulk up in body size. They remained inseparable until after their GCSEs when Peter decided to not continue schooling and became a trainee mechanic. The two still speak often and can be found most other weekends at the local pub talking about old times.

James started his ‘A Levels’ in 1992 at a local college. He studied English Literature, Art and History. During his time at college two monumental things happened in his life. Firstly he met and fell in love with a girl called Julie Watson. They studied all the same subjects and were soon meeting up outside of school too. On his seventeenth birthday they made love for the first time. During the first six months to a year of their relationship James spent much of his time away from his house and was not aware that his Mother had slowly become ill, until his father phoned him one day and broke the news that she had been diagnosed with cancer. It soon transpired that it had been left too long unnoticed and was inoperable. Deborah died on the 18th of July 1994, four days after her 43rd birthday.

James barely left his mothers bedside during her final months, fearing that any moment could be their last. He started to distance himself from Julie, citing their relationship as the reason he hadn't noticed his mother’s illness. Instead of comforting her boyfriend, Julie broke off the romance two weeks before Deborah’s death. James has never seen Julie again.

James dropped out of college to get a job to help pay for living so that Elizabeth could continue her schooling. He worked many jobs between the ages of eighteen and twenty one to pay for her education and to help save for her to go to university. In 1998 whilst working part time in a restaurant he met Sarah Kemp. Very soon they started a relationship. Within a few months she announced that she was pregnant. Both were overjoyed and decided that once the baby was born that they would be married. Soon after her announcement James got a full-time job in telesales, so by the time Christine Jane Hadley was born, on the 3rd of May 1999, they had moved into a nice two-bedroom house and were quite well off financially.

Michael would often visit and Christine had him wrapped around her little finger. It was decided that Sarah should become a housewife to offer a sense of security to the new baby.

James has maintained his job and has been promoted twice. He and Sarah are just as in love now if not more than ever and are currently expecting their second child in mid 2003.
